As the weather begins to change from the warmth of Summer to the crispness of Autumn, I began reminiscing about summers long past, back when our children were younger. Those were enjoyable times that were filled with carefree days and never-ending summer fun (at least for the kids).

I can remember one particular summer when it was extremely hot, and we decided to go to a water park in Wisconsin for a couple of days. As I sat cooling off beneath an umbrellaed table, I watched as our boys were off swimming and my beautiful wife was relaxing in the hot tub. As I gazed around the park surroundings, I found myself people watching. (You know, that act where you suddenly discover that you are watching other people’s actions, movements, mannerisms, etc.) As I was observing the vast crowd, my eyes focused in on an elderly couple just arriving and holding hands. It was very obvious that a family brought along grandma and grandpa for a day of fun in the sun. I watched as they strolled to an empty set of chairs and sat themselves down.

Then, there was an incredible moment of “cuteness.” The elderly man began rubbing sunscreen on the back and shoulders of his wife. I was touched by his expression of love and affection for his beloved spouse. And this was no slop-job either. He worked and worked on her for quite a long time, rubbing and rubbing to ensure that he didn’t miss any spots. I couldn’t help but also notice the smiles that were on both of their faces as this act was taking place. It was a look of feeling needed, wanted, and loved along with and the satisfaction that came from that act of caring. That vision stayed with me for quite some time.

I began thinking about how this represents the way that God loves us. He is always there looking out for our well-being and best interest, and he ensures that we have everything we need to successfully carry out our earthly mission on a daily basis. And no matter how many times we may go astray or are rubbed the wrong way by the evils that surround us, God is also there to protect us and finish the job – no matter how long it takes. God completely covers us with his love and affection, and that should bring a smile to our faces each and every day!

Let me know how God has touched your life in surprising ways.
