My mother was having an issue with her TV, and it was quite the stumper.

She would be watching her program over her cable box and all was right with the world. But suddenly, when the commercials came out, there was no audio. Then when the program returned, the sound came back on. (I jokingly told her that people would pay good money for a feature like this.) But it didn’t end there.

Then she informed me that the commercials had audio, but then her program did not. And if that wasn’t perplexing enough, she even said that when she changed the channel, the program was suddenly in Spanish when it was supposed to be in English. She had no idea what was going on, and neither did I.

Once I went to her place, I tried adjusting a few settings and all returned to normal. We had no idea how or why those settings changed, but at least she was back to having good, old fashioned TV audio.

I Can’t Hear Anything! Have you ever thought that our prayer life is very similar to my Mom’s situation? How often do we not hear God speaking to us throughout our day? If we are so wrapped up in all that is going on around us, are we missing the sweet, tender voice of our Lord when he communicates with us on a daily basis?

We all need to adjust a few of those spiritual settings in our lives and take the time to listen for the voice of our Father. And God doesn’t always communicate in our own language. (And I don’t mean that language that we speak or understand.) I’m talking about the language of unspoken love, beauty of nature, random acts of kindness toward others, and on and on.

God continually speaks with us throughout our day. We just need to take the time to stop and listen. We must find a way to cut through the noise in our lives and tune into what really matters most – spending quality time with our Lord in prayer.

Thus faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ. ~Romans 10:17
