What is it about deer? Whenever you see one, you almost automatically exclaim, “Oh, look. A deer!” Funny how that always seems to be the case. (And then that song from The Sound of Music pops into your head – Doe, a deer, a female deer….

Doe, A Deer, A Female DeerBut there is just something about deer. I’m not sure if it’s because of its beauty, or its presence, or its build, but something just makes us stand in awe. Maybe because they wander wherever they want in search for that special nourishing treat. Perhaps it’s the way they’re always attentive to their surroundings constantly watching out for possible predators. Maybe it’s how they stand erect, almost posing, as they let the wind blow through their fur. Whatever it is, it certainly keeps us captivated.

As I gazed out my hermitage window while on retreat at these magnificent creatures, I thanked God for them as they graced my presence. Knowing that they are free to roam in peace gives me hope that all people can also live in peace, while always longing to get closer to our heavenly Father.

Like the deer that yearns for running streams, so my soul is yearning for you, my God. ~Psalm 42:2
