Like a Rock

Have you ever had a song just pop into your head out of the middle of nowhere? And it was a song that you haven’t heard in years? Well, that happened to me a couple of days ago when the song “Like a Rock” from Bob Seger entered my brain. And what a great tie-in with today’s Gospel (Matthew 7:21, 24-27). Here are some of the lyrics:

My hands were steady; my eyes were clear and bright.
My walk had purpose; my steps were quick and light.
And I held firmly to what I felt was right. Like a rock.
Like a rock, I was strong as I could be. Like a rock, nothin’ ever got to me.
Like a rock, I was something to see. Like a rock.

This song from 1986 was inspired by the end of a relationship that had lasted many years. (Ironically, it was also the start of a advertising relationship with Chevrolet that lasted 10 years.)

Advent is about tearing down the relationship with ourselves and building a new relationship on the foundation of Jesus Christ. It’s about refocusing our mind from what we are currently doing to what we need to be doing. It’s about making sure that we’re as strong as we can be so that we are not distracted by the things that keep us away from God’s presence.

Let’s use this Advent to prepare to meet Jesus anew at Christmas. We need to use every precious day of Advent to build our lives on Jesus, the Rock of Ages. Put some of these into practice this Advent: make an Advent confession, read the book of Isaiah, attend Eucharistic Adoration, devote extra time to prayer, pray the rosary daily, pray with your spouse and children daily; be vigilant and spiritually awake to spot the God moments in our day. All of these will help us better prepare for the Lord’s coming.

Winter storms are on the horizon; and only twenty rebuilding days remain until Jesus comes at Christmas. If we start today and build our house on God, we will withstand whatever blows our way.
