Back in 2004, if you looked in the Urban Dictionary (and yes, there is such a thing – check it out here), you would have found a new word that was introduced – and that word was “sweet.”
For a while, it was all the rage being used quite frequently, especially by teens and young adults. If you were to use it in a sentence, it would be something like this:
- Wow! You just broke the record for eating the most bananas! Sweet!
- Hey, I just got a new car. Isn’t it sweet?
- I just saved a bunch of money by switching to Geico. Sweet!
Most likely, when you and I think of the word sweet, we think of the more traditional definition of “not salty, sour, or bitter, but having the pleasant taste characteristics of sugar or honey.”
But the Urban Dictionary defines “sweet” as being “…used to express satisfaction, acceptance, excellence, exaltation, approval, awe or reverence.”
And as we look at this definition, it is also extremely applicable in our life of faith.
In Psalm 81:14-17, we hear about being satisfied with honey from the rock. Honey is a symbol of the abundant sweetness of God’s gracious gifts – gifts which cannot be earned but can only be received. When we receive honey from the rock, it means that we are tasting God’s goodness and possess a constant desire to have more and more of Jesus in our lives.
We achieve this by strengthening and deepening our relationship with our loving Father. When we do this, our thirsty souls are quenched and our deepest hungers are satisfied. We are strengthened in our weakness and comforted in our sorrows. As we become one with God, our lives become more complete.
And since we are God’s children, our heavenly Father faithfully provides for us each and every day. Even in life’s hardest or most difficult moments, when things look desperate and dire, when we seem to be at our wits end, we can still taste the undeniable sweetness of our loving Savior.
May our prayer be that we always walk in the ways of the Lord and faithfully listen to what He has to say to us.
For You alone, Lord, have all that we need and only You can truly satisfy our hearts. All we have to do is trust in Jesus.
Sweet!!!
