What was He Thinking?

(Based on John 8:51-59)

“Whoever keeps my word will never see death.”
Spoken to the Jews by the man from Nazareth.
The crowd, they thought, “This man is possessed!”
What was he thinking?

Was he greater than Abraham or the prophets of old?
This statement he made was really quite bold.
“We’ll never taste death.” Of this we were told:
What was he thinking?

“Who do you make yourself out to be?
The one foretold? It’s you that is he?
Making these statements will not keep him free.”
What was he thinking?

“You do not know God, but I do,” you say.
“And Abraham, your father, rejoiced to see your day.”
“You have seen Abraham?” We cry in dismay;
What was he thinking?

“Before Abraham came to be, I AM.”
He declared this to all, right were we stand.
Then we picked up some stones to throw with our hand;
What was he thinking?

Could it be that this Jesus is the Son of God?
Sent down from the Father, on earth he does trod.
Here to save us from the sin that we’ve got;
What was he thinking?

Do I refuse to believe in the words that he said:
Without God in my life, my soul would be dead.
Without love in my heart, my life filled with dread;
What was I thinking?

To deny his existence, to deny he’s not here
Will only bring darkness, loneliness, and fear.
To cast away doubt, toward Him I should steer;
What was I thinking?

As I look at my life, I need to transform,
My cold, hardened heart with one that’s reborn.
To trust in the Father and to glorify my Lord:
What am I thinking?

For the remainder of our Lenten journey, let us think about the Great I AM – who he is and why he came to save us.
Then, let us turn our hearts to him and truly listen to his word. For the Word of God is life. And in Him, we will never die!
