Everyday Life

Hard as a Rock

By January 15, 20154 Comments

When I was younger, every time I heard the phrase “harden not your hearts” (Hebrews 3:7-14) I always visualized a human heart turning into a rock. Even to this day, this image still pops into my mind. And I was never quite sure why – until now.

hard as a rockWe need to be able to hear the voice of God amidst all the other voices that are battling for our attention in our world. But more often than not, we tend to give in to those other voices, and we find that our hearts have gone astray.

When we become stubborn, wanting to do things on our own, in our own way, and on our own terms, we harden our hearts. When we choose to put our needs before the needs of others, we harden our hearts. When we allow sin to control our lives, we harden our hearts. When we completely forget about God and all the blessings he has bestowed upon us, we harden our hearts.

It is during these “hardening” times when we need to let God turn our heart of stone back into a heart of love. We need to completely open ourselves up and allow God to break through our stubbornness and make us clean of heart. We need to completely empty ourselves so that God can fill us.

Jesus wants to make us clean. If we trust in God’s heart of love, then we will believe that He is not only able, but also willing to make us whole!
